Harrell’s Fleet wetting agent has proven to be a very effective product for use in turfgrass water management.  Of course, we do not want you to confuse our Fleet with another product that is branded as Fleet as well, but since it is an enema you should be good to go, as both are very good at moving water downward to my understanding. 

We like to refer to Fleet as a water distribution agent rather than a wetting agent due to its unique properties.  Normally, Fleet is viewed as a penetrant wetting agent, which means it is characterized as a product that allows water to move downward or “penetrate” the soil profile. 

Fleet is unique in its properties and application flexibility.  This creates confusion and is the justification for this blog as we field many, many questions specific to how to best apply Fleet.  Hopefully, this blog will address many, if not all of those questions.

Many wetting agents will burn turfgrass if they are allowed to dry on the leaf surfaces.  This is due to the fact that these products are formulated as alcohols.  This is not the case with Fleet.  Fleet alone has not shown any burn potential; however, if you are applying Fleet in combination with other products such as Primo Maxx or fungicides, then we would recommend that you test this combination in a small area before treating the entire turfgrass area.   Ideally, we recommend that Fleet be applied alone or with other soil directed products such as Harrell’s EarthMax. 

The recommended method to apply Fleet would be to make the Fleet application and water immediately with a sufficient amount of water to move the Fleet downward in the soil profile to the desired depth (6 to 8 inches) that you would like to distribute the water.  This is the best and most effective way to apply Fleet. 

Many times, this may not be possible due to other circumstances.  If this approach is not possible, then it would be recommended to apply Fleet and then water as soon as you possibly can to apply the appropriate amount of water to move the Fleet to the depth that you would like for the water to be evenly distributed. It is recommended to not prolong the water application longer than 12 hours after the Fleet application. 

Some turfgrass managers have applied Fleet and then watered “lightly” with the intent to get the Fleet off of the turfgrass leaves. They come back later that day or early evening and water the Fleet application in to a greater depth with more water to achieve the proper depth placement of the Fleet. 

This approach is risky! 

I understand the logic here given the burn potential of many wetting agents, however, that should not be of concern with Fleet.  The reason this application approach is risky is that the initial application of water targeted to “wash” the Fleet off leaves may in fact “lock” in the Fleet at a very shallow depth.  Then, the later application of water to move the Fleet down to the desired depth may not do anything because the Fleet is already locked in from the initial “light” watering.  If this happens, the Fleet will distribute the water as designed, but unfortunately the depth of water distribution will be very shallow and will mean excessive moisture in the root zone. 

If this is what happens or is what you have been guilty of doing, then we would recommend that you reapply Fleet as soon as possible and water in immediately as recommended above to the desired depth to overcome the effects of the shallow distribution of the Fleet with the initial application.

Conversely, what if you applied too much water and moved the Fleet too deep?  What would happen if this occurred?  It is possible to water the Fleet too deep and if that is the case, the results would be that the top inch or so of the soil profile would be drier than the soil profile below.  This “drier” top of the soil profile will not be hydrophobic, but the soil moisture content will be lower than the moisture content at depths below.  If this happens, we recommend reapplying Fleet with less water to overcome the effect from the Fleet being too deep in the soil profile. 

Another potential issue with Fleet efficacy is organic matter content of the soil.  Higher organic matter root zones will require more water to move the Fleet through the organic layer.  Soils with excessive organic matter content may impair Fleet’s ability to effectively distribute water vertically within the soil profile.  Wetting agents cannot outweigh the lack of cultural practices and excessive organic matter accumulation. 

One last question that we get asked often relates to the tank mixture of Fleet with Symphony, which is a water retaining wetting agent.  Yes, these two wetting agents can and have been tank mixed with success.  This would only be recommended where the desired results were a soil profile with water evenly distributed in the top 6 to 8 inches of the profile with more water in the top 2 to 4 inches.  The rates of Fleet and Symphony to be tank mixed will need to be experimented with given the soil conditions of the site.

El agente Fleet humectante ha probado ser un producto muy efectivo para uso en el manejo de agua del césped. Por supuesto, no queremos que confunda nuestro Fleet con otro producto que ha sido marcado Fleet también, pero como es un enema debe estar listo para ir, ya que las dos son muy buenas en mover agua hacia abajo a lo que yo entiendo.

Nos gusta referirnos a Fleet como un agente distribuidor de agua en vez de un agente mojada dado a sus propiedades únicas. Normalmente, Fleet es visto como un agente humectante penetrante, lo cual significa que es caracterizado como un producto que permite el movimiento de agua hacia abajo o “penetrante” el perfil de terreno. 

Fleet es único en sus propiedades y flexibilidad de aplicación.  Esto crea confusión y es la justificación por este blog siendo que acampamos muchísimas preguntas específicamente de como mejor aplicar Fleet.  Con suerte, este blog conteste estas preguntas, si no todas las preguntas.

Muchos agentes humectantes queman el césped si se le permite secarse en la superficie de la hoja.  Esto es debido al hecho de que estos productos son formulados con alcohol.  Esto no es el caso con Fleet.  Fleet solo no ha mostrado ningún potencial de quemar; sin embargo, si va aplicar Fleet en combinación con otros productos tal como Promo Maxx o Fungicida, entonces le recomendamos que usted pruebe esta combinación en un área pequeña antes de tratar el área entera de césped. Idealmente, les recomendamos que aplique Fleet solo o con otro producto dirigido al terreno tal como Harrell’s EarthMax.

El método recomendado para aplicar Fleet es hacer que la aplicación de Fleet y agua inmediatamente con suficiente cantidad de agua para mover el Fleet hacia abajo en el perfil del terreno al deseado profundidad (6 a 8 pulgadas) que le gustaría distribuir el agua.  Este es la mejor y más efectiva forma de aplicar Fleet.

Es recomendad no prolongar la aplicación de agua por más de 12 horas después de la aplicación de Fleet.

Algunos superintendentes han aplicado Fleet y después han echado poco de agua con la intención de sacar el Fleet de las hojas de césped.  Luego regresan más tarde en el día o temprano en la noche y le echan agua a la aplicación de Fleet a mayor profundidad con más agua para alcanzar la profundidad de colocación del Fleet.

¡Esta forma es un riesgo! 

Entiendo lo lógico aquí dado al potencial de muchos agentes humectantes, sin embargo, esto no deber ser la preocupación con Fleet.  La razón esta forma de aplicación es de riesgo es que la aplicación inicial de agua está enfocada en “lavar” el Fleet de las hojas puede en si “encerrar” el Fleet en una poca profundidad.  Entonces, la próxima aplicación de agua para mover el Fleet hacia abajo a la profundidad deseada quizá no pueda hacer nada porque el Fleet está ya encerado desde el riego de poca agua inicial.  Si esto sucede, el Fleet distribuirá el agua como designada, pero desafortunadamente la profundidad de agua será superficial y significara humedad exceso en la zona de raíces.

Si esto es lo que sucede o ha sido culpable de hacer, entonces les recomendamos que vuelva aplicar Fleet lo más pronto posible y riegue con agua inmediatamente tal como es recomendado anteriormente a la profundidad deseable para superar el efecto de la distribución superficial del el Fleet con la aplicación inicial

A la in versa, ¿que si usted aplica mucha agua y mueve el Fleet muy profundo?  ¿Qué pasaría si esto ocurre? Es imposible regar con agua el Fleet muy hondo y si este es el caso, los resultados serian que la pulgada de encima o del perfil de terreno sería más seco que el perfil del terreno abajo.  Este perfil del terreno “seco” encima no será  hidrofóbico, pero el contenido de humedad del terreno será más bajo que el contenido de la profundad abajo.  Si esto sucede, le recomendamos que vuelva aplicar Fleet con menos aguas para superar el efecto del Fleet ser demasiado profundo en el perfil del terreno.  Otro problema potencial con la eficacia de Fleet es la materia orgánica del terreno.

Las altas zona de raíces de materia orgánica va a requerir más agua para mover el Fleet por las capas orgánicas. Terreno con contenido de materia orgánica excesiva puede impedir la habilidad de Fleet para distribuir efectivamente el agua verticalmente entre el perfil del terreno.  Los agentes humectante no pesar más que las prácticas culturales y acumulación excesiva de materia orgánica.  

Una última pregunta que se nos hace muchas veces se relaciona con la mezcla del tanque de Fleet con Symphony, el cual es un agente humectante re teniente.  Si, estos dos agentes humectantes pueden y han sido mezclados con éxito.  Esto solo sería recomendado donde en resultado deseado un el perfil de terreno está distribuido igualmente el encima 6 a 8 pulgadas del perfil con más agua encima de 2 a 4 pulgadas.  La proporción de Fleet y Symphony para ser mezclada debe ser experimentada dado a la condición y área del terreno.
