Earlier this year I wrote a blog that discussed annual agronomic program planning through what we at Harrell’s call the Balanced Approach and the initial results looked very promising when compared to the industry standard. Today we want to provide an update of the work that was done after the first year, as well as other work we invested in throughout the country this year to help us make better recommendations in program planning.

As previously discussed, turf management involves many different challenges that must be overcome to create the best putting conditions for golfers.  These challenges can be anticipated and managed more effectively by implementing a long-term annual agronomic program that mitigates stresses and promotes plant health throughout the year.

Basic considerations for an annual agronomic program are:

Balanced Approach Study

Treatments:

• Harrell's Balanced Approach Annual Program: Soil, fertility and preventative fungicide program
• Industry Standard: Standard fertility program with reactive fungicide program

Data after 1 full year of trial: 

Average increase in quality throughout study was +12%	Average increase in NDVI was +6%

Average increase in root length was +16%	Average increase in root weight was +59%

Conclusions

• In this trial, annual program planning, consistent applications and considerations for soil health, fertilization, and pest prevention provided greater and more consistent quality, NDVI, root length, surface area, root volume, and root weight than the industry standard.
• Agronomic annual planning can provide greater and more consistent results and be more economical than inconsistent applications that provide potential for plant stress and disease.

Conclusions

Adding Vegetable Protein Hydrolysate amino acid increased root biomass by 71% and increased visual color/quality, photochemical activity, and chlorophyll content.
